As a Knife - Original Painting
This painting is part of Hospitality House's 40th Annual Art Auction!
Since 1969, Hospitality House’s Community Arts Program (CAP) is the only free-of-charge fine arts studio and gallery space for artists and neighborhood residents whose socioeconomic struggles would otherwise prevent them from accessing the powerful artistic and cultural landscape of this community. Each year, more than 3,500 artists benefit from the free materials and space to create, house, exhibit and sell their artwork.
The art auction benefits Hospitality House, and is an opportunity to buy work from many incredible local artists. Event takes place April 30th, 2025. See link above for details.
About the Painting:
Measuring 12x16 inches, painted 140lb cold-pressed paper, mounted to an acid-free board with archival methods. Crafted with gouache and ink and finished with a matte varnish with UV Light Stabilizers to protect against fading and damage. It is framed in a gold and blue Art Nouveau 'pie crust' frame, complementing its color palette perfectly and making it ready to hang.
About: Inspired by the tradition of using still life for visual storytelling, I painted As a Knife. The included symbols and objects can hold many meanings, and it was my intention to pull each viewer into that special place where in searching for meaning, we unearth our own. Magical objects in fantasy stories become totemic of our daily hopes and fears. As A Knife represents, among other things, the delicate tension between indulgent fantasy and sharp reality.
